Chin ups are a challenging upper body exercise designed to build a strong upper back and powerful arms. Most gyms are equipped with chin ups bars you can use, or you can install one in your own home for added convenience. Mounting a chin up bar must be done correctly and in a stable location, as your entire weight will be hanging from it. Depending on the style, a chin up can be mounted on wall or ceiling joists, or within the frame of a doorway.
Joist Mounting
Step 1
Search for studs in your walls or ceiling with a stud finder, or tap lightly with a hammer or screwdriver to locate the studs by sound. Mark the spot with a pencil so you won't forget where it is. You can also secure the bar to exposed joists in an unfinished basement.
Step 2
Hold the chin up bar against the spot you will install it, and mark the bolt locations through the holes on the mounting plate, using a pencil.
Step 3
Drill two small pilot holes where you have marked the spots to make it easier to install the bolts. Make the holes slightly smaller than the size of the bolts you are going to use.
Step 4
Hold the chin up bar mounting plate even with your pilot holes, or have someone else hold it in place for you. Insert the bolts into the wall or ceiling until they are all the way in. Shake the bar aggressively to ensure it is secure.
Doorway Mounting
Step 1
Assemble a removable doorway chin up bar as per the instructions in the box. Position the bar in the doorway, so one side rests above the top of the door frame and the handles provide leverage on the other side to hold it in place. Remove and install this type of doorway chin up bar as you use it.
Step 2
Close the door and mark a spot about 2 inches from the top of the door frame, if you are installing a doorway bracket mounted chin up bar.
Step 3
Attach the bracket with the mounting screws provided. Be sure to use all of the screws provided.
Step 4
Place the end of the chin up bar in the bracket and twist to extend it to the other side. Hold the bar level and mark the spot on the opposite side of the frame.
Step 5
Attach the second bracket the same way as the first. Shorten the chin up bar slightly, then hold the end of the bar in one bracket and twist to extend it securely into the second bracket.
