The thyroid's job is producing hormones to help control metabolism and the regulation of energy distribution in the body. This tiny glad absorbs iodine from the body to produce hormones that keep the body working efficiently. According to Dr. Andrew Weil, 20 million people have thyroid disease. Many people are not aware of their condition and suffer the effects of mood swings, unexplained weight gain or loss, dry skin and fatigue if they don't have adequate treatment.

Considerations

Herbal supplements may improve thyroid functioning as well as decrease some symptoms of hypothyroidism, such as mood deregulation. Before using any type of herb for thyroid problems, consult your caregiver to ensure the herbs you want to take are not contraindicated with any other essential medication you may be taking. Though herbs are natural, they're also powerful sources of medicine and should not be used haphazardly.

Iodine

Keeping the diet enriched with nutritive foods that naturally contain healthful levels of iodine is a must for people with thyroid disorders. However, in our modern world, the addition of iodine to table salt points to other causes of hypothyroidism than iodine deficiency. For this reason, herbalist Rosemary Gladstarr advises keeping iodine consumption to natural sources such as shellfish, kelp and dulce to avoid excess levels of sodium. Herbs containing higher levels of iodine, such as Bladderwrack, should be taken with a physician's approval because too much iodine can create the disease it's meant to treat.

Digestive Support

Thyroid hormones are dominantly converted in the liver and the kidneys. Supporting these two organs symbiotically improves thyroid health and efficiency. Eating easily digestible foods and herbs that improve digestion such as peppermint, ginger and digestive grape bitters may aid in thyroid health. Use herbs only in conjunction with your health care practitioner's advice.

Mood Support

When thyroid issues cause fluctuating or depressed mood symptoms, it's very important to keep an open line of communication with your health care provider. Naturopathic doctors are likely to recommend supplementing your treatment plan with mood-stabilizing herbs such as St. John's wort, valerian root or kava kava. Depressive symptoms such as suicidal thoughts and ideation or inability to perform your regular daily routine should be addressed by a mental health professional immediately.

How to Use Herbs for Thyroid

Herbs can be used fresh or in dried extracts, such as capsules, powders and teas. Glycerin-based or alcohol-based herbal tinctures can be made or obtained, and are considered to be a generally safe way to help improve thyroid function and mood. Conduct enough research about any herb before consumption to avoid allergic reaction or other complications.
