Psoriasis--a chronic skin condition characterized by thick, silvery scales and dry, red and itchy patches of skin--can be alleviated by a variety of home treatments.
Baths
Take daily baths, but make sure to use lukewarm water--not hot--and do not soak for more than 15 minutes at a time.
Moisturizers
Apply a moisturizer after taking a bath and anytime the weather is cold and dry. The Mayo Clinic recommends applying moisturizer to the affected area, covering it with plastic wrap and leaving it on overnight, washing it off in the morning.
Sunlight
Short exposures to sunlight three to four times a week may benefit psoriasis. Make sure to use sunblock that's rated at least 15 SPF, recommends the Mayo Clinic.
OTC Products
The University of Maryland Medical Center recommends over-the-counter remedies such as ointments and creams containing coal tar or anthralin, dandruff shampoos (for cases of scalp psoriasis), creams containing salicylic acid or lactic acid (to remove scales) and cortisone creams.
Other Options
The above treatments can be combined for the best results. In addition, look for ointments or creams that include jojoba, zinc pyrithione, aloe vera and/or capsaicin. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, these ingredients will soothe and moisturize inflamed skin, and may help to remove scales and relieve itching.
