Colon hydrotherapy is a method of cleansing the colon that is similar to an enema, but much more thorough. During colon hydrotherapy, warm water is used to flush out the entire colon, which is approximately 5-feet-long, according to the Miracle House Colonic Clinic website. Sometimes herbal therapy is used in addition to a specific number of colon hydrotherapy sessions to assist in thorough cleansing of the colon. Use caution when trying any herbs for this purpose.

Peppermint

Peppermint is soothing in nature and is often used to aid in digestion and to calm upset stomach. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, peppermint is effective at calming the stomach muscles used in digestion and in helping improve the flow of bile through the intestines. Taking peppermint by way of capsules, tea or tincture can result in more effective colon cleansing with colon hydrotherapy. Use caution when trying peppermint.

Slippery Elm

Slippery elm was originally used by Native Americans to heal skin ailments and injuries including ulcers, boils, wounds and burns. Taken orally, it also provides relief for digestive problems including diarrhea. Slippery elm contains a substance called mucilage, which when combined with liquid, becomes a thick gel. In the colon, the gel helps to attract decaying fecal matter, which it takes with it as it exits the body. Slippery elm can be in tablet or capsule form or as a powder in teas and extracts. Use slippery elm with caution.

Turmeric

Turmeric contains curcumin, which may help stimulate the gallbladder to produce bile, reports the University of Maryland Medical Center. This could be helpful in maintaining colon health in conjunction with colon hydrotherapy. The Colon Cleansing Guide website suggests that turmeric can also be used to get rid of parasites in the colon. Turmeric can be taken by capsule, fluid extract or tincture.
