Aromatherapy uses scent, usually in the form of plant-based essential oils, to treat physical and mental symptoms. The University of Maryland Medical Center reports that essential oils have been used in healing for almost 6000 years. The University of Maryland reports there have been few scientific studies on the efficacy of aromatherapy. Some people may find essential oils irritating. While an aromatherapy practitioner will sometimes massage oils into your skin, you may also inhale the scent of the oils. Aromatherapy diffusers disperse the scent through the air.
Step 1
Open the diffuser. Different diffusers have different mechanisms for opening. Some feature a cap on the top. Others may be closed with a cork on the top or bottom. Other diffusers feature shallow bowls or trays with no lids.
Step 2
Add water to the diffuser if the manufacturer's directions instruct you to do so. Electric warming diffusers, tea light diffuses and some fan diffusers use water mixed with the essential oils.
Step 3
Add several drops of essential oil to the diffuser. If the diffuser uses water, you add the oil to the water. If the diffuser has a scent pad, apply the oil to this pad. If you're using a clay diffuser, apply the oil directly to the clay. Use only a few drops at a time.
Step 4
Replace the lid on the diffuser if needed. Turn on electric diffusers or light the candle in a warming diffuser.
Step 5
Sit back and allow the scent to diffuse through the room. Breathe normally.
