Calcium is a mineral that is carried in the blood stream. It can be free or bound to proteins in the blood. It is essential for many cellular processes, especially in nerve cells. Calcium levels in the blood stream that are too high, a condition known as hypercalcemia, causes problems in cells, leading to certain negative symptoms.

Muscle Weakness and Fatigue

Since calcium is a crucial mineral for nerve functions, including nerve communication, excessive calcium leads to nerve problems resulting in fatigue and muscle weakness according to "Harrison's Principles of Internal Medicine" by Anthony Fauci, M.D. The effects occur in both the central nervous system, which includes the brain, and the peripheral nervous system, which includes the nerves of the body. In addition to fatigue, the affects on the brain can cause lethargy, depression and confusion. The effects on the nerves in the body can also result in muscle and joint pains in addition to weakness.

Gastrointestinal Symptoms

Another common symptom of high blood calcium is constipation according to "Robbins and Cotran Pathologic Basis of Disease" by Dr. Vinay Kumar. Nausea and vomiting can also be symptoms. High blood levels of calcium are also associated with pancreatitis. The pancreas is an organ that releases digestive enzymes into the small intestine and helps the body regulate levels of nutrients in the blood.

Fluid Handling Changes

Other problems may occur in how the body handles fluid. Excessive thirst is a possible symptom of high blood calcium. In addition, increased frequency of urination or volume of urine may occur. Increased calcium in the urine can also lead to a greater chance of developing a kidney stone.
