BSN Syntha-6 is a protein supplement that is purported to enhance sports performance. Unlike many other protein supplements, Syntha-6 is intended as a meal replacement, as it contains carbohydrates and fat in addition to protein. Syntha-6 contains a blend of protein sources and comes in nine flavors: banana, chocolate, caramel latte, chocolate mint, chocolate peanut butter, cookies and cream, mochaccino, vanilla and strawberry. Despite the purported benefits, you should consult a medical professional before using Syntha-6 or any other supplements.
Calories
According to BSN's official website, each serving of Syntha-6 contains 200 calories. The serving size is 44 g, and there are about 30 servings per container, BSN explains. If this is not enough calories to support your exercise pursuits -- Nutristrategy's calorie expenditure calculator notes an hour of vigorous weight lifting may burn up to 500 calories -- then you may wish to consume multiple servings or mix Syntha-6 with milk rather than water.
Protein Content
According to BSN, each serving of Syntha-6 offers 22 g of protein, which accounts for 44 percent of the daily recommended intake of protein. The protein contained in Syntha-6 comes from a variety of sources: whey protein concentrate, whey protein isolate, micellar casein, milk protein isolate and egg albumen, among others. Each protein source has different properties, such as digestion rate and fat content. Whey protein may be beneficial for dieters, according to research from the October 2010 issue of the "British Journal of Nutrition." A study found that whey protein produced a more profound appetite suppressing effect than three other types of protein, and led to reduced food intake at subsequent meals.
Carbohydrate Content
According to the official website for BSN, each serving of Syntha-6 contains 14 g of carbohydrates, which is 5 percent of the daily recommended intake of carbohydrates, based on a 2,000 calorie diet. Of these carbohydrates, 5 g come from dietary fiber, and 2 g come from sugar. Fiber, like whey protein, helps to suppress your appetite, indicating this product may be useful for weight management. However, other factors, such as calorie content, need to be considered as well.
Fat Content
Each serving of BSN Syntha-6 contains 6 g of fat, according to the company's website. Only 2 g of the fat comes from saturated fat. BSN notes that some of the fat in this product comes from medium chain triglycerides, or MCTs. According to research published in the March 2002 issue of the "Journal of Nutrition," MCTs promote increased satiety compared to other fat sources and may increase energy expenditure, or calorie-burning. Both of those properties would be beneficial for dieting.
Other Nutrients
According to BSN's website, Syntha-6 has several other important nutrients, such as vitamins and minerals. The website notes that one serving of Syntha-6 contains 10 percent of the daily recommended intake of calcium, 4 percent of the daily recommended intake of magnesium, 2 percent of the daily recommended intake of iron and 10 percent of the daily recommended intake of phosphorous.
