How to Manage Depression Without Medicine

Depression is a condition that most everyone goes through at some point in their life. When it comes and goes in a short time frame, there is no need for concern. In some situations, however, depression can become all-encompassing and can take over every aspect of your daily life. At this point, some form of treatment is necessary. Conventional medications are often prescribed, but they can come with harmful side effects. Try alternative treatments for depression that do not have any negative side effects.

Step 1

Seek therapy. Talk therapy can be done with a counselor or therapist on a one-on-one basis. Discuss coping strategies for your depression and learn to adjust your mind frame to think happy, positive thoughts instead of negative, depressing thoughts.

Step 2

Go for a walk. Exercise can help release mood-enhancing brain chemicals called "endorphins." Get 30 minutes of exercise daily, and do something that you enjoy. Examples include weight training, running, biking, swimming, stair stepping, playing tennis or walking.

Step 3

Partake in a relaxation activity like yoga, which involves deep breathing. According to Stephen Cope, psychotherapist and author of "Yoga and the Quest for the True Self," yoga's postures can improve your mood by moving energy through places in your body where feelings of grief or anger are stored. Attend yoga classes or get a DVD for practicing at home.

Step 4

Avoid bad influences and situations that can cause your depressive symptoms to get worse. Avoid any people that cause you to get depressed. Seek out healthy relationships with people that can offer you support and positive energy.

Step 5

Try acupuncture to relieve your depression. According to John Allen of The University of Arizona, and Tucson acupuncturist Rosa Schnye, acupuncture may prove to be at least as effective in the treatment of depression as psychotherapy or drug therapy.

Step 6

Cut back on your bad habits. According to the Mayo Clinic, alcohol and illicit drugs can worsen depression symptoms. Avoid alcohol or any type of illegal substances, even in small amounts, to manage your depression.
