Nasal congestion is the result of inflammation in the sinus cavity, according to the University of Maryland's Medical Center. Nasal congestion can make a person feel stuffy and mentally restricted, and it can produce pain throughout the head. Nasal congestion is commonly treated with over-the-counter medications, such as antihistamines and decongestants. The food a person eats can help the body prevent and treat nasal congestion, according to the Health Education Library for People. Conversely, some foods cause increased mucus production and can thicken the mucus already in the sinuses. Talk with a doctor before modifying your diet to treat any aliment.

Food Allergens

Some people have food allergies that can increase nasal congestion within a few minutes after consumption. The most common food allergies are tree nuts, dairy, eggs and fish, according to MedlinePlus. When someone has a food allergy, his immune system mistakes certain proteins in the food as a harmful substance and attacks the substance with antibodies. The antibodies cause chemical reactions in the body and produces histamine. Histamine released in the sinuses causes inflammation and irritation. Avoid all known food allergens to prevent further congestion. Common antihistamines may not be effective for treating congestion depending on the severity of the food allergy.

Mucus-Forming Foods

Foods that cause the body to form excess mucus, such as refined sugars and flours and diary products are know to produce excess mucus. To avoid congestion stay away from white sugar, white flour, cakes, candy, soda and other overly-processed foods. Preparing all meals with fresh foods and increasing the amount of fruits and vegetables in your diet can help to reduce congestion, according to the Health Education Library for People. Replace dairy products with non-dairy alternatives, such as rice milk, soy-based cheese products and non-dairy coffee creamer.

Drinks that Dehydrate

Proper hydration is essential for sinus health, according to the University of Maryland's Medical Center. Certain beverages promote dehydration of the body by depleting water. These beverages include caffeinated beverages, such as tea, coffee and soda. Another dehydrating beverage is alcohol. Avoid all types of dehydrating beverages when combating congestion. Replace the beverages with water and diluted fruit juices. Drink hot herbal tea to loosen phlegm and promote proper sinus drainage.

Spicy Foods

Spicy foods have been known to clear up the sinuses when they're congested, but recent research indicates that spicy foods that cause acid reflux and heartburn can lead to sinus infections, according to MSN News. Avoid the overuse of spicy foods, such as chilli peppers, curry and hot sauce when you are experiencing congestion.
