Rhinoplasty is a form of cosmetic surgery that can change the shape of your nose from altering the length to making your nose straighter. Undergoing a rhinoplasty procedure can even help to correct birth defects or help with breathing difficulties. There are risks associated with having a rhinoplasty, like pain or swelling. Experiencing swelling can be uncomfortable, but there are exercises available to decrease swelling. Perform exercises under your surgeon's supervision.
Pressing
Gently place your thumb and index finger on the swollen area. Press down on the swollen area for about one minute per hour. Do this exercise daily. This exercise can help reduce swelling by helping to loosen up scar tissue. This can be done for up to one month after surgery. Check in with your doctor to make sure the exercise is helping the area. Ask your doctor for additional techniques to address swelling if puffiness persists.
Massage
Place your index finger and thumb on the area as recommended by your surgeon. Gently massage the swollen area by pinching the tip and flaring your nostrils. Repeat this exercise every day. Have your doctor demonstrate massage to ensure proper technique. Consult your doctor to make sure the massage exercise is reducing the swelling in the area.
Working Out
Get the green light before increasing activity. Avoiding strenuous activity after a rhinoplasty will help reduce swelling. Don't do high impact exercise like jogging or aerobics classes. Avoid swimming or any movement that requires bending over. Any activity that might cause injury to the nose should be avoided for six weeks. Slowly begin engage in low-impact exercise. Start by taking a relaxing walk to stay active. Refrain from activity if you begin experience increased swelling or nose bleeds.
