With thousands of sites across the state, Wisconsin is a terrific place to spend quality time outdoors. Whether backpacking through the forests of the Northwest, or canoeing down the Flambeau River, there are hundreds of outdoor activities to keep you active and connected to nature. Being a winter state, Wisconsin is the perfect place to rent a cabin to keep you cozy during your trip, and private cabins are available for rent throughout the state.
Northwest Region
In the Northwest of Wisconsin, try canoeing or kayaking down the Brule River or admiring the scenery around the shore of Lake Superior. The Brule River is the perfect place to get some exercise or simply take in the surroundings due to the varying degrees of turbulence. Parts of the waters are calm while others contain white water rapids raging from classes I to III. Along the river there are numerous canoe and kayak rental businesses. You will find a link to one such business, Brule River Canoe Rental, in the Resources section.
Central West Region
Near the Western border lies the Elroy-Sparta State trail, offering a 30-plus mile hiking or biking trail that takes its travelers through open fields, majestic forestation, and even rock tunnels. There are many camping sites and small towns along the trail. For a different take on cabin camping, try the Caboose Cabin along this trail. It's an old caboose that has been retrofitted as a cozy family cabin. Find a link to the Caboose Cabin site in the Resources section.
Northeast Region
One of the gems of Wisconsin is located in the northeastern tip of the state, at Peshtigo River State Forest and the Governor Thompson State Park. This area offers some of the state's best fly-fishing, as well as white-water rafting. If you don't already have one, you can purchase your fishing license online at the state Department of Natural Resources website listed in the Resources section.
Central Region
Central Wisconsin features some of the best opportunities for wildlife observation. Try the Buckhorn State Park to connect with your fellow creatures. This park offers exciting outdoor activities, including hiking, skiing and snowmobiling. This region also features many lakes, as well as the Wisconsin River.
Southeast Region
Believe it or not, there is plenty of wildlife and outdoor activity available near Milwaukee. This region offers skiing for the winter traveler at glacial mountains such as Wilmot Mountain, as well as rock climbing and spelunking. For accommodations, the area has traditional camping as well as many options for more luxurious, privately owned lodges and cottages available for rent.
