Pinched nerves may occur anywhere in the body and are causes by excessive pressure being applied to the nerve by surrounding bones, muscles and cartilage. Pinched nerves may cause a shooting pain that can lead to numbness or weakness of the area affected. Vitamins that assist in nerve regeneration, growth and maintenance may aid in bringing relief to a pinched nerve.

Vitamins that are essential in the maintenance and growth of nerves may lessen pain caused by pinched nerves. Vitamin A is necessary for the functioning of the nervous tissues as well as maintaining nutrition. Vitamins E and B-12 play roles in the maintaining the normal health and activity of certain parts of the nervous system. Vitamin B-3 is vital for central nervous system stimulation. Nerves are an essential function of the body as they allow you the ability to feel. The nerves are responsible for sending signals and messages to the brain. For example, when you touch something hot, the nerves send signals to the brain which in response signals you to pull your hand back. The nerves use electrical and chemical processes to send messages to and from the brain throughout the body.

Causes

Pinched nerves may be the result of a herniated disc, spinal stenosis or bone spurs. Herniated discs occur when a disc between vertebrae ruptures. Spinal stenosis is commonly caused by arthritis and may lead to bone spurs. According to Medicine Net, other causes of spinal stenosis may be infection, tumors and metabolic bone disorders such as Paget's disease.

Symptoms

Symptoms of pinched nerves vary depending on the affected area. Numbness is one of the most common symptoms and complaints of those that suffer from pinched nerves. MayoClinic.com states that a burning or sharp pain radiating outward will occur when the nerve stems from the spinal cord. In addition, coughing and sneezing may aggravate this pain.

Treatment

Pain due to a pinched nerve may be alleviated by taking a daily multi-vitamin supplement and getting plenty of rest. According to MayoClinic.com, preventative measures such as maintaining a healthy weight, good posture, including flexibility and strength exercises in your daily exercise regimen and taking frequent breaks when performing repetitive tasks may reduce the risk of pinched nerves.
