Full Body Detox Herbs

Modern living creates a toxic environment. Air, water and food pollution from industry and heavy chemical use puts our bodies' detox systems to the test every day. If our bodies cannot eliminate the toxins faster than they accumulate, immune function is impaired and disease is invited into our lives. Many herbs offer natural detoxification solutions to help the body cleanse excess toxins in various organ systems.

Turmeric

Turmeric is viewed as a general tonic for health the world over. The yellow powder best known as cumin spice or curry spice is a natural carcinogen inhibitor. Turmeric works with the liver to encourage phase one liver detoxification. Life Extension Foundation also reports that it has anti-cancer and heart health benefits.

Milk Thistle

Milk thistle is first and foremost recognized as a liver tonic. Many of the toxins trapped in the body will end up being passed through the liver. Silymarin, the healing compound in milk thistle extract, is reputed to repair the liver damage brought on by alcohol, drugs, hepatitis and toxins from modern living. Milk thistle also protects the liver from damage. As an antioxidant, it stimulates protein synthesis in the liver and promotes natural body cleansing.

Aloe Vera

Aloe vera is not just something to put on your skin when you get a sunburn. Aloe completely detoxifies the digestive system, killing bacteria, yeast, viruses and parasites. Many will first experience a laxative effect from aloe vera. The pure gel or juice of aloe vera helps to remove dead cells and various toxins from the body. It may even reduce side effects associated with chemotherapy and radiation treatments.

Slippery Elm

Slippery elm is one of the herbs in the famous Essiac Tea blend, reputed to heal many diseases, including cancer. Slippery elm can lower stomach acidity, absorb toxins, decrease gas, and draw impurities out of the body. Benefits abound in the mucous membranes, adrenal glands, stomach, bowels and lungs. Many opera singers use slippery elm for its soothing effect on the throat.

Psyllium

Many agree that nothing can compare to the beneficial effects of psyllium on the colon and intestines. Psyllium promotes the removal of toxins by stimulating the intestines to eliminate. It is also a good source of fiber to promote regularity and colon cleanse. Psyllium swells in the presence of water, acting as a brush that sweeps the insides of the digestive system clean. Make sure to take adequate fluids with psyllium to counter this sponge-like effect.
