The exact causes of acne are not known but involve excess oil, bacteria, inflammation and clogged pores. Around 40 to 50 million Americans suffer from acne each year, with most cases in teenagers and young adults. However, anybody can suffer from acne. Several vitamins can reduce and prevent acne.
B Vitamins
A variety of B vitamins from the B-complex group can help treat acne. Thiamine, or vitamin B1, helps enhance blood circulation in skin cells and also acts as an antioxidant while promoting overall healthy skin. Pantothenic acid, or vitamin B5, helps your body deal with stress, which is known to cause acne. Low amounts of niacinamide, or vitamin B3, pantothenic acid and riboflavin, or vitamin B2, may result in acne formation.
Vitamin A
According to Dr. George Obikoya of the Vitamins & Nutrition Center, vitamin A works with carotenoids to help keep the protective tissue of your skin healthy and strong. Vitamin A also prevents acne formation by reducing the production of natural body oils, such as sebum. Vitamin A helps the body deal with oxidative stress, which may cause acne.
Zinc
Zinc is an essential trace mineral that can be found in mostly every cell in your body. Zinc contains antioxidant properties to protect your skin tissues and cells from free radicals, substances that may cause damage. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, some studies have suggested that zinc supplements can help improve acne. Evidence shows that taking a zinc supplement in combination with topical antibiotic erythromycin can be helpful in treating acne.
