Scars form as the result of injuries to the skin. While this natural process allows the body to heal cuts, scrapes and burns, the resulting scar may create an unpleasant appearance, especially on exposed areas such as the face. Many factors affect the way your skin heals and forms scars. Caring for a wound on your cheek may help minimize the scarring and serve to enhance the appearance of the tissue as it heals.
Step 1
Keep your cheek clean while your wound heals. Use a gentle cleanser and minimal pressure to avoid disturbing the healing tissue when you wash. After cleansing, splash the wound lightly with clean water to rinse away all traces of your cleanser. Cover your wound to keep it dry and clean while it begins to form a scab. Change your bandage or dressing frequently to discourage the growth of bacteria.
Step 2
Apply a moisturizing lotion to your check, covering both your scab and the area surrounding your wound. Gently dab the lotion over your scabbing wound, allowing the lotion to absorb into the skin. Avoid rubbing or tugging at your cheek while the scar is beginning to form.
Step 3
Apply sunscreen to your scar tissue before going outdoors. Avoid any sunlight exposure to limit the possibility of discoloration of your scar. Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with a sun protection factor of 30 or more. Reapply your sunscreen frequently, especially after swimming and sweating. The Harbin Clinic in Georgia recommends protecting your scar from sunlight for at least the first year.
Step 4
Massage your scar once the scab disappears. Apply your moisturizing lotion to your cheek and use your clean fingertips to manipulate the skin over and around the new tissue, using motions that include circles and straight lines, to increase the circulation and help stimulate nerve endings. Repeat the massage at least three times each day.
Step 5
Apply a piece of silicone scar tape to your new scar tissue. Cut the tape to fit over the edges of your scar. Apply to your clean dry skin, according to the instructions on the package. While you may want to avoid wearing this product on your face during the day, keeping it on during the night whenever you are home may help flatten your scar tissue. You may need to use this product for several weeks to help minimize the appearance of your scar.
Tips and Warnings
- Talk to your doctor about medical options for repairing a scar on your cheek. Some professional treatments, such as cryosurgery and steroid injections may help reduce the scar tissue, making the irregularities less obvious.
- Since facial scars can permanently affect your appearance, consult your doctor immediately for large wounds on your face, especially those that may require stitching or surgical repair.
