Natural Alternatives to Ritalin

Ritalin is a medication prescribed most often to children for the treatment of Attention Deficit Disorder and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, also known as ADD and ADHD. According to the Nemours Foundation, Ritalin works by restoring dopamine and norepinephrine to normal levels within the brain. Those suffering from ADD and ADHD are reported to have deficiencies in producing these neurotransmitters. As with any medication, there are side effects associated with its use and many individuals seek alternative treatments.

Diet Modification

There has been research done on ADD and ADHD diets to control the disorder. It is recommended that a diet high in protein and Omega-3 fatty acids be eaten by individuals suffering the ADD and ADHD. Examples of foods high in protein and Omega-3 fatty acids are eggs, beans, meats and cheeses. Fish, such as tuna and salmon, and nuts are high in Omega-3 fatty acids. Protein and Omega-3 fatty acids promote the production of dopamine and norepinephrine.

Diet Elimination

As reported by the Mayo Clinic, a study completed by the United Kingdom's Food Standards Industry has shown a correlation between food additives, such as dyes, and hyperactive behavior. It is currently believed that certain elements should be removed from the diet to reduce the intensity of the symptoms associated with the disorder. Finally, some experts report that those suffering from ADD or ADHD are more sensitive to additives, such as sugars, caffeine and dyes, and therefore they should be avoided in the diet.

Environment Modification

There are several ways to modify environment as a means to control ADD and ADHD. Providing a stable and predictable environment will lessen the stimuli experienced by an individual. By having a routine and structure, it becomes easy for the individual to stay focus and on task. An example would be to use timers for tasks, clearly labeling containers or boxes, and explaining the various steps of a task to make progress easier to measure and therefore the task becomes easier to complete.
