To grow properly and develop new protein tissue, children need more protein per pound of body weight than adults. Most well-fed, healthy children get enough protein from the food they eat, but too little protein may cause muscle loss and a gradual breakdown of protein tissues, according to Oklahoma State University registered dietitian Janice R. Hermann, Ph.D. Protein supplements created for children are available as powders, shakes, drinks and bars, and they may be fine in moderation. Consult a pediatrician before giving your child any supplements.

Pediagro

Pediagro, a capsulized food created for toddlers and young children by the company Protica, is a ready-to-drink beverage that comes in portable 3-oz. vials. The fat-free, 80-calorie liquid is available in kid-friendly flavors such as grape, fruit punch, blue raspberry, orange and apple. Capsulized foods provide complete macro- and micro-nutrient-enriched meals with the nutritional value of whole foods in only a few liquid ounces.

As a dietary supplement, each serving of Pediagro provides a child's body with macronutrients, including 10 g of protein and 10 g of low-glycemic carbohydrates; and micronutrients, including 27 vitamins and minerals. Pediagro can also alleviate or prevent dehydration caused by diarrhea or vomiting.

Pediagro can be served to children in a variety of ways, including frozen as a popsicle, heated and consumed as a warm beverage, or at room or refrigerator temperature. Because each vial is less than 3 fl. oz., it can be added to juice, applesauce and many other beverages or foods.

Boost Kid Essentials

Boost Kid Essentials provides balanced nutrition as a drink in a convenient child-friendly box. Each 8-oz. drink box of this protein supplement beverage provides 7 g of protein and 25 vitamins and minerals. It was formulated especially for children, is lactose-free and comes in creamy chocolate, strawberry and vanilla flavors.

Resource Beneprotein

Resource Beneprotein is an instant whey protein powder that can be mixed into children's favorite warm or cold foods without altering a food's flavor or texture. Each scoop of Resource Beneprotein provides 6 g of 100 percent whey protein that Nestle Nutrition claims can help build strong bones and muscles.

Resource Breeze

Resource Breeze is a fruit-flavored nutritional energy drink that provides a child with 9 g of protein and 250 calories in an 8-oz. beverage bottle. The manufacturer claims this orange, peach or wild berry drink can boost children's energy intake and build muscle mass.

Learning Factors Daily Nutrient Boost

Learning Factors Daily Nutrient Boost is a wild berry-flavored smoothie mix with purified, high-quality, un-denatured whey protein. The manufacturer says this low-allergy smoothie mix is good for the brain, gastrointestinal system and immune health because it contains vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and amino acids.

Pure Kidz Protein Power

Pure Kidz Protein Power and Pure Kidz Protein Power Plus offer a rich source of protein for children who may need additional protein in their diet. The formula is made with natural ingredients, including amino acids from whey, grain and legume proteins, complex carbohydrates, antioxidants, fruits, vegetables, whole grains, enzymes, vitamins and minerals.

Kidz Protein Power is hypoallergenic, highly digestible and allergen-free. This product mixes easily and can be added to a fruit smoothie or made into a creamy shake. It can also be added to foods such as yogurt, pudding, oatmeal, cereal, pancakes or muffins.
