Sauna belts use infrared technology to focus infrared heat to a single targeted portion of your body. Infrared radiation makes up more than half of the rays given off by the sun and is readily absorbed by matter that is then warmed by the rays, says Rita Lambros-Segur, an infrared therapist. Lambros-Segur says the infrared rays increase the white blood cell count in the body, which increases the body's level of immunity.
Using a Sauna Belt
The sauna belt is similar to a heating pad. It wraps around your body and fastens with a Velcro closure. The Original Sauna Belt website suggests wrapping the belt loosely around the area you want to target, then turning the dial until you reach the maximum temperature. Keep the belt at the maximum temperature for five minutes, then adjust it to the desired temperature for the remaining 45 minutes. Stand up while wearing the sauna belt to burn maximum calories.
Weight Loss
The average person loses a pint of sweat during a short period in a dry sauna, says Harvard Health News. The pulse rate jumps by 30 percent, doubling the amount of blood the heart pumps each minute. This increase in heart rate mimics the increase in heart rate the body experiences during a cardiovascular workout, so it can assist in weight loss. The sauna belt is designed to make you sweat but targets only one part of your body, so the weight and water loss is not usually as dramatic as spending time in a full dry sauna.
Back Pain Relief
Heat therapy helps relax muscles and relieve tension in the body. The sauna belt can be used like a heating pad to help increase circulation to injured muscles to help heal them more quickly. Lambros-Segur says infrared therapy is used to relieve arthritis, increase blood flow and relieve muscle spasms and joint stiffness.
Temperature Benefits
According to the Original Sauna Belt website, varying degrees of temperature have different effects on the body. Blood circulation increases between 86 and 104 degrees F and muscles experience a deeper relaxation between 104 and 122 degrees. Some physical therapists use infrared heat treatment to assist patients with deep joint pain, like rheumatoid arthritis. The website recommends temperature for this type of therapy to be between 122 and 140 degrees F. Body shaping and slimming uses temperatures between 140 and 176 degrees, the temperature required for fat cells to break down.
Warnings
Use the sauna belt only for up to 50 minutes at a time to avoid burning the skin. The sauna belt's website suggests using the sauna belt up to 45 days in a row, then taking a week off before using the belt again. Don't use any creams on the skin when using the sauna belt because the heat will open pores and might lead to an allergic reaction from the cream or lotion penetrating too deeply into the skin. Wait at least two hours after a meal before using the sauna belt.
