The joints consist of ligaments, tendons, cartilage and fluid. They are the point at which movement is made possible and they are found in multiple locations on the body. Over the course of time, the joints can become afflicted with soreness, inflammation, swelling and stiffness. This can be from various joint conditions, such as arthritis, tendinitis, bursitis or overuse. Relief for sore joints can be found through both conventional and natural methods.
Step 1
Avoid impact. When the joints are sore, take weight off of them and do not perform any shocking actions. If you have a sore knee joint for example, rest your leg and elevate it to reduce swelling. If your finger joints are sore, do not try to bang on a stuck door to open it.
Step 2
Use an anti-inflammatory. Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are over-the-counter medications that you can use to reduce inflammation and pain in your sore joints. Examples of these are ibuprofen, naproxen and aspirin. You can also get these in stronger prescription forms from your doctor if your joints are not responding.
Step 3
Perform light exercise. Immobility can cause your joints to stay stiff and sore. If you perform light forms of exercise, you can improve your range of motion and also strengthen nearby muscles. Swimming and water aerobics is a good choice because there is no impact and you are buoyant in water.
Step 4
Bask in warm water. The muscles next to the joints have a tendency to become sore. According to the Mayo Clinic, heat can help ease pain and relax tense muscles. Take a 15-minute hot bath or use heating pads or hot packs for warm therapy.
Step 5
Use a pain cream. You can get various joint relief creams over-the-counter at your local pharmacy. They have active ingredients like capsaicin, arnica, menthol and camphor. These medications cause a hot and cold feeling that can temporarily numb your pain.
