It seems paradoxical that eating breakfast every day can help people lose weight. After all, it's logical to believe that people who skip the meal or eat only a morning snack might consume fewer total calories throughout the day, setting them up to shed pounds faster. However, that's not the case. Healthy breakfasts are actually a helpful weight loss tool and can encourage other healthy habits as well.

According to the Mayo Clinic, people who skip breakfast have an increased risk of obesity, but people who eat breakfast regularly are more likely to have healthier diets, eat more nutritious foods and consume less fat. Eating breakfast may also have mental benefits. The Cleveland Clinic states that a daily breakfast helps people be alert and sets them up to handle challenges better. Physically, breakfast is able to aid with weight loss by boosting metabolism and helping keep it active throughout the day. Getting calories, vitamins and minerals in the morning also curbs hunger later and can help limit overall calorie consumption.

An ideal healthy breakfast follows a few basic guidelines. "Cooking Light" magazine notes that the healthiest breakfasts are rich in fiber and include a combination of lean protein, carbohydrates and unsaturated fat. Those elements are particularly useful for weight loss because they encourage lasting fullness while activating metabolism and providing high-powered, lasting energy. Quick, healthy options for people on the go include a yogurt-based, low-sugar smoothie; low-fat granola bars; whole-grain crackers with nut butter or jam and fresh fruit with granola and a container of yogurt.

Considerations

The best weight loss results come through a variety of healthy lifestyle changes rather than just one or two. In addition to eating a healthy breakfast every day, improve the rest of your diet, add regular exercise to your routine and strive to eliminate unhealthy habits. A series of small changes may not seem like much when it's broken down, but together, the adjustments can help with achieving and maintaining a healthy weight for life.
