Twinings of London is a traditional English tea company that was founded in 1706. They export tea of all varieties, including green tea, to countries all over the world. Now owned by Associated British Foods, Twinings is a member of the Ethical Tea Partnership, which promotes fair trade and ethical treatment of tea producers.

Green Tea Leaves

To make normal tea leaves, the leaves are plucked in the fields and then dried or withered to remove moisture. The leaves then undergo a process known as oxidization, where they are heated so that enzymes in the leaves react with the air to create the typically dark appearance of tea leaves. To make green tea, oxidation must be prevented, so the leaves are pan dried or steamed to destroy the enzymes and keep them green, giving them a distinctly fresher flavor than ordinary tea. Green tea is meant to be consumed without milk, and can be served with lemon, mint or other flavorings.

Caffeine

Green tea contains less caffeine than a regular cup of tea. According to the Twinings USA website, Twinings green tea contains roughly 30 mg of caffeine per cup. This is less than the 34 mg in a regular cup of tea, which is in turn roughly half of what is found in a cup of coffee. The recommended daily maximum caffeine consumption for adults is 300 mg, or roughly 10 cups of green tea.

Benefits

Green tea is generally associated with having several health benefits. Green tea is rich in antioxidants that absorb free radicals in the body. It also contains catechin, which has been claimed to boost metabolism and help burn fat. It contains vitamins A, B1, B2 and B6, as well as potassium, calcium, zinc and folic acid. Green tea can also help make up the recommended daily fluid intake of between 50 to 85 ounces of fluid each day for adults.

Nutrition

According to the website The Daily Plate, green tea is completely free of calories. This makes it an excellent choice for dieters, as filling your stomach with liquid can help reduce hunger cravings. It also contains fewer calories than ordinary tea, which is usually consumed with milk; or soda or fruit juice, which are both high in calories and sugars. However, green tea with added flavorings such as lemon may contain trace calories.

Types

Twinings green tea comes in teabags for easy brewing. It is also available with fruit and herb flavorings such as lemon, peppermint, cranberry or jasmine. Other variations include gunpowder green tea, which is loose-leaved green tea that requires a teapot or strainer to brew. As they dry, the leaves are rolled into tight little balls that expand when soaked in hot water, giving them their name. You can also buy cold brewed green tea bags, which allow you to brew your own iced tea using a teabag, cold water and ice.
