Gout is a type of arthritis caused when urate crysals accumulate around a joint, causing intense pain, inflammation and pain. Urate crystals can form when the body is unable to process high levels of uric acid in the blood. Because foods rich in purines can increase uric acid levels, avoiding them can help decrease the risk for gout attacks.

Alcoholic Beverages

People with gout should limit or avoid alcohol, as more than two drinks a day for men and one for women can increase the risk for a gout attack. According to the MayoClinic.com, evidence suggests beer in particular can exacerbate symptoms for men.

Organ Meats

Meats that come from animal organs naturally contain high levels of purines that can produce excess uric acid. According to the North Carolina State Extension, organ meats include liver, kidneys, hearts, brains and sweetbreads or animal pancreas.

Seafood

Gout sufferers should avoid seafood containing high levels of purines. Examples of high purine seafood, according to the Johns Hopkins Arthritis Center and AsktheDietitian.com, are herring, anchovies, sardines, tuna, codfish, trout and haddock. Shellfish such as mussels and scallops are also rich in purines.
