Alli is the brand name for the generic drug orlistat, a medication that aids in weight loss by limiting fat absorption by the digestive tract. When used in conjunction with a healthy diet and exercise routine, this over-the-counter medication can help overweight people lose weight. People should be aware of the potential side effects of Alli before beginning treatment with this weight loss medication.

Diarrhea

Treatment with Alli may cause diarrhea in certain people, Drugs.com warns. Diarrhea is characterized by loose, runny bowel movements that may occur in conjunction with abdominal pain or cramping. Persistent diarrhea can cause excessive fluid loss, which can lead to dehydration. People who experience diarrhea or other stomach problems, including pain, nausea or vomiting, while taking Alli should speak with a medical professional to determine whether continued treatment with this medication is appropriate.

Excessive Gas with Discharge

Alli may cause excessive, odorous gas, which may be embarrassing to certain people. Gassiness may also lead to uncomfortable bloating, and certain people may expel small amounts of oily discharge or mucus from the rectum. This discharge may result in the appearance of an oily stain on a person's underwear. If these side effects are bothersome, people should consult a physician.

Liver Damage

In May 2010, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration issued a safety alert to healthcare professionals regarding reports of liver damage associated with Alli. As of October 2010, no definite association has been established between orlistat and the risk of liver damage. Though liver damage rarely occurs in people taking Alli, symptoms of liver damage should be immediately reported to a doctor. Symptoms include pale stools, dark urine, persistent nausea, itchy skin, diminished appetite, fatigue, fever or unusual yellowing of the eyes or skin.
