Players throughout the world play competitive and recreational volleyball. The surface on which players compete, which sex is competing and age of the participants determines net height. Officials measure that height before a match starts, from the ground surface to the peak of the net at center court.
Olympic Volleyball
The regulation height of the net in men's Olympic volleyball competition is 7 feet 11 5/8 inches. In the Olympics, the serve may not touch any part of the net, nor may players touch the net as they prepare to hit the ball. The regulation height of a women's volleyball net is 7 feet 4 1/8 inches.
Beach Volleyball
The height of the net in men's beach volleyball is 7 feet 11 and 5/8 inches. The rules allow a 3/4-inch variance for measuring the net on the beach. The rules also allow incidental contact with the net.
Senior Volleyball
In senior volleyball, the height of the net is 7 feet 9 5/8 inches for men 55 to 69. The height of the net is 7 feet 6 inches for men 70 and over.
Antennas
Antennas are placed on the outer standards of the net in competitive volleyball. The antenna sends a signal to the referees if a ball or player contacts the net. The antennas are not in the area of play. If a ball should hit the antenna, it is considered out of bounds. and the point and serve goes to the opponent.
Safety
Posts support the volleyball net. These posts are right next to the court and athletes can come into contact with them. The posts must be padded with at least one-half inch of a shock-absorbing material to prevent players from injury and to protect the equipment.
