There are several possible reasons why your silvery-white hair has turned a dull, yellowish color. Although a yellow tint may be a normal result of aging, it may also be due to various foreign materials, according to The Vancouver Sun. Gray and white hair contains no pigment, but chlorine and other chemicals in water, sunlight, cigarette smoke and air pollution can contribute to the yellow cast. You may not be able to completely remove the yellow, but with proper care, you can camouflage the yellow by accentuating the silvery tones in your hair.
Step 1
Install a water filter on your shower nozzle that will decrease the amount of chlorine in the water.
Step 2
Protect your hair with a wide-brimmed hat, scarf or umbrella whenever you're in the sun.
Step 3
Stop smoking and avoid smoke-filled rooms.
Step 4
Shampoo your hair every day with a blue- or violet-based shampoo that will help to neutralize the yellow, or a clarifying shampoo formulated to remove deposits from your hair.
Step 5
Follow up with a blue- or violent-based rinse to cover the yellow. Follow the directions carefully -- although rinses and dyes can hide the yellow, they can also leave your hair with an unwanted blue or purple tint.
Tips and Warnings
