Twenty-three million Americans are affected by diabetes, according to the American Diabetes Association. Diabetes is a chronic illness that can lead to many different complications including kidney problems, eye problems, and nerve problems. In addition, it is associated with heart complications and amputations. If you have diabetes, there are ways to fight it.

Step 1

Keep track of your blood sugars. Talk to your doctor about how often you should be checking your blood sugars and when. Write them down in a log and if you have high-blood sugars, write down what you ate that day and what your activity was. Keeping track of your blood sugars can help you and your doctors identify bad habits that need to be changed as well as identify whether a change in medication is necessary.

Step 2

Eat healthy. Ask your doctor of visit a registered dietitian or nutritionist to give you a dietary plan that is right for you. They will teach you to count carbohydrates and caloric intake. For the first few weeks, it may be helpful to have a sample diet plan. When you are used to counting calories and carbohydrates, it will be easier to come up with your own menu that is within your restriction.

Step 3

Stay active. Take a walk, ride a bike or go swimming. Join a gym or exercise to an exercise DVD. Physical activity is an important way to help keep your blood sugars controlled and lose weight if you need to. Ask your doctor what kind of physical activity would be safe for you.

Step 4

Take your medications as directed. When you have diabetes, it is important to take medications if your doctor orders them to keep your blood sugars controlled. Know your schedule, potential side effects and what to do if you have them, and what you should report to your doctor. Use reminders, such as a calendar or medicine box if necessary, to keep you on track with your schedule.

Step 5

Visit your doctor regularly. It is important for your doctor to monitor blood work that shows how your blood sugars are being controlled. In addition, it is important to check for any related complications of diabetes.

Step 6

Take care of your feet. Inspect them daily and check for any sores or ulcers. Visit your doctor or podiatrist if there are any foot problems, such as calluses or wounds.

Step 7

Get support from friends and family. Let them know how they can help you stay on track with your diet and physical activity plan.
