Eczema, a chronic skin condition that produces sores on the skin that are itchy and inflamed, is most often found in young children and outgrown by adulthood, according to MayoClinc.com. Certain elements can trigger an eczema flare-up, such as cigarette smoke, airborne allergens and food allergies. Aside from an allergy to a particular food, most foods will not affect a person's eczema. Once a food allergy is diagnosed, it's best to avoid eating that food.
Tree Nuts
A tree nut allergy is a common food allergy that can lead to an eczema flare-up. Tree nuts include walnuts, hazelnuts and almonds. Peanuts are not considered a tree nut; however, they have similar proteins to that of tree nuts, causing similar allergic reactions, according to KidsHealth.org. A tree nut allergy is caused by a hypersensitivity to different tree nuts. The immune system mistakes the proteins as dangerous substances, such as a virus or bacteria and attacks it to protect the body. The result of the antibody attack is the production of histamine, which triggers eczema. Tree nut ingredients are required by the FDA to be disclosed on all pre-packed food products.
Dairy
A dairy allergy is a malfunction of the immune system to the proteins found in cow's milk products. A dairy allergy is different from being lactose intolerant. Lactose intolerance is the lack of the lactase enzyme to break down the sugar in cow's milk. A dairy allergy is a hypersensitivity of the immune system to milk proteins, such as whey. The common symptoms of a diary allergy are skin reactions, such as eczema, asthma and gastrointestinal issues. The patient may experience shortness of breathe, wheezing and chest discomfort within minutes of ingesting diary, according to the Cleveland Clinic.
Eggs
An egg allergy is a common food allergy that can lead to eczema. MayoClinic.com states that an egg allergy may be treated with over-the-counter antihistamines. The allergy symptoms and the eczema are both the result of elevated levels of histamine in the blood. An antihistamine blocks the body's ability to produce histamine, providing relief.
Fish
The most common fish allergy is from shellfish, which include lobster, crab and shrimp. While the typical allergic reaction to shellfish causes the lips to swell, it can trigger eczema as well. CNN.com recommends that someone with a shellfish allergy should avoid consuming fish products and by-products.
