Treatment of Eczema & Psoriasis

Eczema and psoriasis are closely related skin conditions in which the body's immune system reacts to healthy cells as if they were injured or invaded by foreign bodies. The results are inflamed skin that forms scaly red patches that are often very itchy and painful. Treatment for both conditions involves similar approaches.

Bacteria

Soak in a warm bath with added baking soda or finely ground oatmeal. To kill the bacteria that can grow on eczema-irritated skin and cause itchiness, add about 1/2 cup of bleach to the tub.

Itching

Calamine lotions and ones that contain at least 1 percent hydrocortisone can, according to the Mayo Clinic, relieve the itchiness that is often associated with both eczema and psoriasis.

Dry Skin

Use other over-the-counter products that contain ingredients such as jojoba, zinc pyrithione, aloe vera and/or capsaicin. These ingredients will soothe and moisturize inflamed, dry skin and may relieve itching as well.

Phototherapy

Expose the affected skin to sunlight. Too much sun can worsen the condition, so expose the affected areas to sunlight only about three or four times a week. Use a sunblock that's rated at least 15 SPF.

Humidifier

Dry air can exacerbate both eczema and psoriasis. Use an indoor humidifier whenever the weather is dry and cold.

Expert Insight

According to the Mayo Clinic, the best approach is to try a variety of these treatments and to experiment to see which combinations work best for your particular case, because what works for one eczema or psoriasis sufferer may not work for another.
