In order to get a flat stomach, you must lose weight over your whole body. There is no such thing as "spot reduction." You can lose weight all over, including your stomach, by creating a caloric deficit--i.e., your calorie intake must be less than your expenditure. There are some foods that can give you a competitive advantage.
Fruits and Vegetables
Fruits and vegetables are high in water content, vitamins, minerals and fiber. Fiber is a non-digestible substance that helps fill you up and keeps you feeling full after you are done eating it. This can lead to less calories being consumed and weight being lost.
Nuts
Nuts are high in protein, essential fatty acids and fiber. Eating them can help keep you feeling full and lead you to eating less calories.
Eggs
Eggs are high in protein, choline and vitamin B12. When you eat them, they can help fill you up and, according to research from the Rochester Center for Obesity in America, eating eggs for breakfast could help to limit your calorie intake throughout the rest of the day, by more than 400 calories.
Beans
Beans are high in protein, iron and magnesium, and they are also complex carbohydrates. Due to their high fiber content, they can also fill you up quickly and give you sustained satiation. Examples of these are red beans, kidney beans, lentils, pinto beans, soy beans, black beans and lima beans.
Protein
Meats are high in protein and low in carbs, and some forms are high in fat. Chicken breasts, lean red meat, turkey breasts, venison and bison are all examples of lean meats that are low in fat. Since they are high in protein, eating them can help increase your metabolism. This is because it takes the body more work to break down protein than it does fat and carbohydrates. Cold water fish like salmon, tuna, herring and mackerel are also good sources of protein. They also have omega-3 fatty acids, which are beneficial fats.
Whole Grains
Oatmeal is a whole grain that is high in fiber, low in fat and it has moderate amounts of protein. When you eat in first thing in the morning, it can kick start your metabolism, and it can also keep you feeling full for several hours. This will prevent you from eating a doughnut or some other type of junk food later in the morning. Examples of other whole grains that offer the same benefits include barley, millet, brown rice, quinoa, couscous and bulgar.
