Cellulite is the dimpled skin that usually appears on the thighs and buttocks due to accumulated fat cells pushing up against the skin while the fibers that connect the skin to the underlying muscle are pulling down, says MayoClinic.com. This creates an uneven surface or the orange-peel effect and, alhough cellulite is not a serious or dangerous health condition, most people are keen to reduce its appearance. Body wraps are a popular treatment, but generally only provide short-term results and should be used in combination with a healthy, low-fat diet and regular exercise.
Step 1
Decide whether body wraps are for you. Body wraps involve wrapping the body in cloths that are soaked with moisturizing oils or, most commonly, seaweed. Some people believe that seaweed can draw fat out of the body, but there is no scientific evidence of this and it is more likely to draw the natural oils out of your skin, says the Cellulite Treatment website. The idea is that by firmly wrapping the affected areas, you can push the fat cells back down and away from the skin's surface, says the Cellulite Expert website. Body wraps are usually left on for at least 30 minutes and, while you may appear to have lost inches and cellulite is less obvious, this is more likely to be due to fluid loss, the prolonged compression of the skin and the softening of the skin. These results are temporary, but one of the more lasting benefits is a feeling of relaxation.
Step 2
Consider a DIY Body Wrap. One way to reduce the appearance of cellulite is to keep the skin moisturized, which plumps up the skin's surface, says the Ayushveda Magazine website. Body wraps can help with this process by locking the moisture in -- and you can save money by doing them at home. Slather a good moisturizer on to the affected body parts and secure hand towels over the top then wrap with plastic film -- the kitchen variety will do just fine.
Step 3
Prepare for a professional body wrap. Make sure you go to a reputable salon with trained therapists to help ensure their products and techniques are legitimate. During the wrap, your limbs will be completely covered and wrapped quite firmly. If you are prone to claustrophobia, ask the therapist if you can leave your arms free. This can help relieve the sense that you are trapped.
