Azopt is the brand name for the drug brinzolamide 1 percent. It is an eye drop in suspension form used to treat conditions of increased intraocular (eye) pressure, such as glaucoma.
Drug Class
Azopt, a sulfonamide, belongs to the class of ophthalmic medications called carbonic anhydrase inhibitors. These drugs work by decreasing the production of aqueous humor--the fluid that fills the space between the cornea and the iris--thereby decreasing intraocular pressure.
Indications And Dosage
Azopt is used to treat open-angle glaucoma and ocular hypertension. Usual dosing is one drop to each eye three times a day, or as directed by your physician.
Considerations
Wash your hands before administering Azopt. Shake the bottle to mix the suspension before using. Do not touch the tip of the bottle to the eye or any surface to avoid contamination. Instill the medication directly into the conjunctiva of the eye.
Side Effects
You may experience stinging, burning, and blurred vision may after using Azopt. If any of these problems persist, consult a physician.
Warnings
Remove your contacts before using Azopt and wait 15 minutes before reinserting them. Wait 10 minutes in between agents if taking you're taking Azopt with other ophthalmic medications.
Do not take Azopt if you have sensitivity to sulfonamides or any of its active ingredients.
