Dewey’s Pizza, owned and operated by Andrew DeWitt, was opened on April 1, 1998 in Cincinnati, Ohio. DeWitt’s vision was to create a restaurant that serves pizza, salads and micro brewed beer to an up and coming, gentrifying Cincinnati neighborhood. Now, Dewey’s Pizza also has locations in northern Kentucky, Dayton, Ohio; St. Louis, Cleveland and Columbus.

Nutrition Data

Unlike many other restaurants, Dewey’s Pizza does not list nutrition data on its website. So to estimate calorie and fat content, you can either analyze the ingredients used in Dewey’s menu items, or use the USDA’s National Nutrient Database as a guideline. A 14-inch plain cheese pizza from a generic chain fast food restaurant has 272 calories per slice, nearly 10 g of fat and more than 33 g of carbohydrates.

Vitamins and Minerals

Pizza is not a bad source of certain vitamins and nutrients. The same slice of plain pizza has 7 percent of the recommended daily allowance of vitamin A, 23 percent of thiamin, 30 percent of riboflavin and 24 percent of folate. As far as mineral content is concerned, one slice contains 12 percent of the RDA of iron and 22 percent of phosphorus.

Other Nutrients

Pizza is not a bad source of nutrients. In fact, Claudia Zapata writes on My San Antonio, the website for the San Antonio Express-News, that pizza has great nutritional potential. Tomato sauce is a good source of vitamin C and lycopene, which has been linked to reducing the risk of certain cancers. Cheese is a good source of calcium. Vegetables are low calorie, low fat and offer a variety of nutrients including iron, calcium, and folate.

Menu Items

Dewey’s Pizza is more than just a pizza joint. You can order at least a half dozen different salads, a calzone, locally prepared deserts and seasonal specials. For those concerned about the calorie and fat content in a pie like the Bronx Bomber, topped with two kinds of meat, mushrooms, onions, green peppers and black olives, order a lower-calorie salad first to take up some space in your stomach and pack a nutritional punch with vitamin-rich veggies. If the Bronx Bomber is anything like Little Caesars meat and cheese pizza – which is difficult to determine since Dewey’s does not provide nutritional facts – you’re getting an estimated 279 calories, 13 g of fat, 36 mg of cholesterol, 665 mg of sodium, and 14 g of protein, and that’s if you just stop at one slice.

Beer and Wine

Another feature of Dewey’s Pizza is an extensive beer and wine list. Also, each location offers its own drink menu. What’s not unique, however, is the nutritional facts in beer and wine. One bottle of regular beer can have 153 calories and 0 g of fat, according to the USDA database. Watch out for dark beers, which can have more calories. A serving of red wine has about 125 calories with 0 g of fat, and white wine has about 121 calories with 0 g of fat.
