Vitamin D, or ergocalciferol, is a vitamin that helps the body absorb calcium, states Medline Plus, a National Institutes of Health website. In addition, vitamin D controls the amount of calcium and phosphorus in the blood. Although vitamin D is found in foods such as dairy products, fish, cereals and margarine you may still be deficient and require medication to have healthy levels of vitamin D in your system. You must take a vitamin D pill properly for it to be effective.

Step 1

Ask your doctor to prescribe 50,000 IU of vitamin D, or a 1.25mg capsule of vitamin D. This supplement may also be purchased at the drug store or grocery.

Step 2

Check the label and make sure that you are not allergic to any ingredients in the capsule. According to Drugs.com, common ingredients include food coloring, gelatin, glycerin, simethicone, soybean oil and titanium dioxide.

Step 3

Wash your hands and unscrew the cover of the vitamin D bottle. Remove one vitamin D pill.

Step 4

Put the vitamin D pill in your mouth and swallow. Drink a glass of water after swallowing.

Step 5

Replace the cover and store in a dark, cool, dry place.

Tips and Warnings

  • Avoid biting the vitamin D capsule.
  • Frequently have your vitamin D levels checked to make sure blood levels are adequate.
