The dreaded double chin occurs in the area under the jaw where excess fat gets stored. As you age, your skin loses elasticity and gravity becomes your enemy as the skin no longer stays hidden under the jaw and begins to droop. This is also known as turkey neck. Although cosmetic surgery is always an option to remove the excess fat and hanging skin, there are ways to improve your appearance naturally.
Step 1
Change your diet. According to the American Academy of Family Physicians, a pound of fat is approximately 3,500 calories, so in order to lose one pound per week, you must cut 500 calories per day. Avoid foods high in fat, calories and sugar by filling your diet with lean meats, whole grains, fresh fruits and veggies instead.
Step 2
Start an exercise program. Exercise in addition to eating healthy will burn fat faster than cutting calories alone. Some exercise programs to choose from include aerobics, running, walking, weight lifting and swimming.
Step 3
Walk in combination with the exercise program you choose. Walk to the store, take the stairs instead of the elevator and park towards the back of the parking lot. These are minor daily changes that can help you lose your double chin.
Step 4
Chew on celery, carrots, cauliflower or sugar-free gum throughout the day to keep the jaw and facial muscles moving.
Step 5
Avoid deliberate sun exposure. The sun breaks down the elasticity of the skin prematurely according to the American Academy of Dermatology. If you must be in the sun, apply a sunscreen with a minimum SPF of 30 to your face and neck.
Step 6
Perform exercises that target the jaw and neck area. Tilt your head back as far as it will go and continue to widely open and close your mouth. Repeat this as often as possible.
Tips and Warnings
- Choose a workout regimen that will be fun and motivating for you. For example, if you hate running, you will have trouble sticking to a daily run, so try something else you like better. Avoid fad diets since their results are typically short term. According to Health Fitness Doctor, you should set realistic goals for your diet and fitness plan to avoid losing motivation if your goals are not met. Losing one pound per week is a realistic goal.
- According to the American Academy of Family Physicians, you should not lose more than two pounds per week since this increases the chance of gaining weight back and it also reduces your energy level.
