Weight lifting straps improve the grip on barbells and dumbbells and allow you to work certain muscles to the point of exhaustion. Straining to maintain your grip can detract from the effectiveness of certain weight lifting exercises. Weight lifting straps are made from thick nylon weave or a similar strap material. The straps are looped around the wrists and wrapped around the shaft of the barbell, dumbbell or cable handle.

Step 1

Insert the end of the belt through the double-d rings to form a loop. Pull the loop securely around your wrist and grab a barbell or dumbbell shaft. Take several wraps around the shaft with the section of belt closest to your wrist and note the excess belt material.

Step 2

Use large scissors to cut the belt so there will be approximately 6 inches of excess belt remaining after you make the wraps around the shaft. Apply quick-drying glue to the threads where the belt has been cut. Repeat this process to size the second strap and allow the glue to dry.

Step 3

Use the utility knife and cut a piece of household sponge the width of a strap. Turn the piece in its edge and use the knife to cut the piece to approximately 1/8-inch thickness. Place the 1/8-inch thick piece on the strap at the point where it contacts the palm of your hand and secure it using several wraps of auto upholstery tape. Repeat this to pad the other weight lifting strap.

Tips and Warnings

  • Omit the sponge pads if desired.
