Brazilian keratin is a treatment that can be used on all hair types to turn frizzy, curly, unmanageable hair into soft, silky, straight hair with the use of keratin and heat. This process takes an average of two to three hours and lasts up to four months depending on how well you care for your hair. Brazilian keratin is offered in several salons, but you can do it yourself at home for a fraction of the price.
Step 1
Wash your hair thoroughly with a clarifying shampoo. Hair can accumulate dirt and residue from products used during the course of the day such as hair spray and mousse. Clarifying shampoos rid hair of residue and hair products. Pure, clean hair is needed to prevent any chemical interactions with the treatment.
Step 2
Comb through your hair using a wide-tooth comb and get out any knots and tangles. It is important to have smooth, knot-free hair for the application. Next, completely dry your hair using a blow dryer. Once hair is dried, use hair clips to separate your hair into three sections. Using plastic gloves, apply keratin to your hair in sections from roots to ends until hair is saturated with the treatment.
Step 3
Wait 15 minutes with the treatment in your hair, then once again dry your hair with a blow dryer, trying to straighten it as much as possible with a brush. Once complete, use a flat iron at high heat setting, or up to approximately 400 degrees F, and begin straightening your hair in small sections, sealing the keratin into the hair cuticle. Continue this process until your hair is completely straight and silky.
Step 4
Leave your hair unwashed for at least four days. This will allow the treatment to fully set in to the hair and ensure optimal results.
Tips and Warnings
- To prolong the effects of the treatment, do not use shampoos that contain sodium chloride, as this will strip the keratin from your hair.
- It is not recommended to use this product while pregnant or breastfeeding.
