The common cold and the influenza virus are two different illnesses, but symptoms can seem pretty similar. Although antiviral drugs may help flu symptoms ease a little sooner, there really isn't a good treatment for either the cold or the flu. But no matter what illness you have, there are ways to make yourself feel better while your body recuperates from the cold or flu.
Step 1
Get rest. One of the best things you can do for your body when it's trying to fight off the cold or flu is to allow it plenty of rest. Get plenty of sleep each night and nap during the day--even more often when you have a fever, according the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP).
Step 2
Drink fluids. Keep your body hydrated and break up mucus and congestion in your nose and chest by drinking plenty of fluids. Stick to clear fluids: The AAFP says water and clear, broth-based soups are good choices.
Step 3
Ease throat pain. Whether you're battling the cold or the flu, you probably have a sore throat. To help soothe a sore, scratchy throat, get an over-the-counter throat lozenges or sprays that alleviate pain. Gargling a solution made with salt and warm water can also soothe throat pain, says the AAFP.
Step 4
Break up mucus. A congested head and chest are some of the worst symptoms of the cold and flu, but over-the-counter decongestants and cold/flu medications can help to alleviate congestion. The AAFP says that you can also use a salt water solution as nose drops to break up congestion and mucus.
