Some women are gifted with thick, luxurious lashes, while others have to rely on cosmetics to get a similar effect. Women with certain hair loss conditions or who have undergone chemotherapy may also experience insufficient lashes. If fake lashes and thick coats of mascara aren't your style, you may be able to grow thicker, darker and longer lashes with a prescription eye solution containing 0.03 percent bimatoprost. This medication, marketed under the name Latisse, is FDA approved to lengthen the growing cycle of eyelashes.

Step 1

Talk to your doctor about a prescription for 0.03 percent bimatoprost ophthalmic solution. Your doctor will evaluate your current lashes and your eye health to determine if the benefits of the medication outweigh the risks.

Step 2

Wash your face with a mild soap to remove any skin oils, make-up or other cosmetic products that could prevent the medication from reaching your hair follicles. Dry your face thoroughly.

Step 3

Apply the medication in the evening, before bed. Dip the specially designed applicator into the medication bottle, then swipe the applicator across your lash line on your upper lashes only. Repeat on the second eye. Do not apply to your lower lashes.

Step 4

Wash your hands thoroughly after application to prevent getting it on other areas of your skin. Bimatoprost can cause increased or darkened hair growth in other places it regularly touches.

Step 5

Use the medication nightly for the full 16-week treatment course, then talk to your doctor about your results. Do not use past 16 weeks without approval from your doctor.
