1. Step Lightly
Sometimes corns and calluses are hereditary and you're going to get them no matter what you do. If your bones are not grown in correctly, you may need surgery to correct the problem and prevent further callus build-up. More often, however, the thick bumps and boils that form on your toes and feet are the result of shoes that are too tight or too loose. Ill-fitting shoes have no place in your wardrobe and should be banished. Getting fitted for good shoes is especially important when you work and play on your feet for prolonged periods of time.
2. Shave Carefully
A pedicure done by a professional might entail the use of a very sharp blade that is used to shave off excess-callused skin. While you can get blades for your own use, it can be dangerous and quite easy to cut a little too deep, creating even bigger problems. Run the blade very lightly over the foot calluses. It is better to repeat the slicing a number of times taking of minuscule layers of skin rather than risk bleeding.
3. Drip the Drops
Try any number of callus removers available in the pharmacy. They are mild enough to be safe and effective enough to dissolve unwanted calluses. With these over the counter treatments, you don't have to worry about any side effects. Hydrocortisone creams and Epsom salts also can prove to be effective in melting away those trouble spots.
4. Pad the Pain
Stick callus pads on the bumps before putting on your socks. You can also wrap the spot in cotton and tape. Any kind of padding will relieve the tension, giving your callus time to heal and disappear. You'll need to wear wider shoes or shoes made of cloth or soft leather that will bend with the padding and not create even more pressure in order for this tip to work at all.
5. Let it be Naturally
Try gentler means to remove calluses by soaking your feet in warm water each evening. Pat them dry and then gently rub them with a pumice stone or soft file. Aloe creams and foot lotions rubbed on the callused skin will not only feel good after a long day of painful walking, but they also will help to soften the callus so that it can dissipate. Continue with this treatment every day until the callus is gone.
