Silk soy milk is a source of protein, calcium and vitamins. Because it is fortified with some nutrients, soy milk actually contains similar amounts of some minerals and vitamins as regular cow's milk. Silk comes in a variety of flavors, each of which contains slightly different amounts of carbohydrates and sugar. Most flavors, however, do contain similar amounts of all other nutrients. Dietary reference intake, or DRI percentages, are for adults under age 50.
Calories
One cup of plain Silk soy milk contains 100 calories. These calories come from a mix of fat, protein and carbohydrates. One cup contains 8 g of carbohydrates, which accounts for about one third of the calories. One cup also contains 6 g of sugar and 1 g of fiber.
Protein and Fat
One cup of plain Silk soy milk contains 7 g of protein. This is 15 percent of the DRI of protein for women and 12.5 percent for men. One cup of plain Silk soy milk contains 4 g of fat, only .5 g of which is saturated fat. Soy milk is free of both trans fatty acids and cholesterol.
Minerals
One cup of plain Silk soy milk contains 299 mg of calcium, which is 30 percent of the DRI. This is similar to the calcium content of 2 percent cow's milk, which contains 293 mg of calcium per cup. Silk soy milk also contains 1.07 g of iron per cup, which is 13.4 percent of the DRI for men. Because women require more calcium than men, the 1.07 g of iron in one cup of soy milk only provides 5.9 percent of the DRI for women. One cup of Silk also provides 15 percent of the DRI for potassium, as well as 10 percent of the DRI for selenium, 5.6 percent for magnesium, and more than 5 percent for zinc.
Water-Soluble Vitamins
Silk soy milk contains large amounts of some of the water-soluble B vitamins. One cup provides more than 100 percent of the DRI for vitamin B-12, which assists in metabolism and helps to prevent certain types of anemia. One cup of soy milk also supplies 45 percent of the DRI for riboflavin and 6 percent of the DRI for folate.
Fat-Soluble
Silk soy milk contains the fat-soluble vitamins A and D. One cup supplies 71 percent of the DRI for vitamin A for women and 56 percent for men. Vitamin A is important for healthy vision and supports the immune system. One cup of soy milk also provides 58 percent of the DRI for vitamin D, which helps in the maintenance of proper calcium levels.
