While there isn't shortage of commercial scar-treatment products, you may prefer to prepare your own all-natural scar salve at home. Choose a mixture of ingredients known for healing both old and new scars related to stretch marks, burns, wounds and scrapes. You may already own many of the basic supplies, such as an aloe vera plant and olive oil. Look for additional ingredients like rose hip oil and beeswax at health food stores.

Preparation

Infuse chopped, peeled onion in olive oil for at least three weeks. Fill a clean pint jar with the onions and pour enough olive oil into the jar to cover the onions completely. Steep the mixture for three weeks. Strain the onions and reserve the olive oil. Just before making the scar salve, cut open an aloe-vera leaf and scoop out the inner gel. Grate beeswax.

Recipe

In a heat-proof bowl or measuring cup, Combine 1 oz onion-infused olive oil with 1 oz rose hip oil, 1 oz cocoa butter and 1 oz beeswax. Heat the mixture at a low setting, either on the stove or in the microwave, until the beeswax and cocoa butter melt. Remove from the stove, add 2 tsp. aloe vera juices and squeeze the contents of four vitamin E capsules into the mixture. Stir and pour the mixture into a wide-mouth jar. Pour ¾ tsp each lavender, chamomile and helichrysum essential oils over the top of the mixture. Cap the jar immediately.

Healing Powers of Ingredients

Olive oil represents an excellent medium for infusing healing botanicals, in this case onions. Commercially, onion extract is a key ingredient in the scar ointment Mederma, due to its anti-inflammatory properties and its ability to suppress scar tissue formation. Nutrient-rich, anti-inflammatory aloe vera helps speed healing in burns and new scars, although it may not help the appearance of old scars. Cocoa butter is known to penetrate deeply, to treat skin at the dermis level. The National Association for Holistic Aromatherapy recommends lavender and chamomile essential oils for wounds and burns and general skin healing, while aromatherapy author Jeanne Rose additionally recommends helichrysum essential oil, also known as everlast essential oil, for the same purposes. Rose also singles out rose hip seed oil as the carrier oil best suited for healing scars.

Simple Remedies

Aloe vera gel and onion extract are available commercially. Consider using many of the ingredients in the scar salve as “simples,” an old-fashioned word for one-ingredient medicines. Essential oils, however, should be diluted in carrier oil before using on skin.

Tips

Increase or decrease the amount of beeswax to thicken or loosen the salve. If you don’t have access to all of the ingredients mentioned in the recipe, keep the basic proportion of three parts carrier oils to one part beeswax in mind. Use one essential oil rather than three to reduce costs.
