Herbal supplements are popular, despite advances in modern medicine. Since prescription drugs don't cure everything, and often come with a variety of side effects, many people are turning to natural herbal supplements. Supplements may also have side effects, and they are not controlled by a government agency.

Angelica Root

Angelica root has been used to control menopausal symptoms as well as menstrual periods and cramps. The supplement usually includes the Chinese angelica root as well as vitamins A and B, bergapten, resin, valerianic acid, tannins, bitter iridoids, coumarins and volatile oil. It can be taken in capsules, tablets or as a tea. Since it affects the female reproductive system, it is not recommended for nursing mothers or pregnant women.

Fenugreek

Fenugreek is used to help regulate blood sugar levels and stimulate insulin production, so it is often recommended for use by diabetics. It is also sometimes used as a laxative. It is available in seed, powder, liquid or pill form. Fenugreek also can be made into a tea.

Licorice

Licorice has many uses, including treatment for ulcers, diabetes and tuberculosis. It can be used in pill or tea form, or chewed as a root for stomach ailments. Large amounts of licorice should be avoided because it can cause some side effects.

Reishi

The reishi mushroom may be used to treat insomnia, weakness, coughs, asthma and fatigue. The mushroom may also help treat hepatitis B, diabetes and cancer. It may be ingested as a mushroom, powder or tea.

Uva Ursi

Uva ursi is used by Native Americans as a medicine for urinary problems, including cystitis. Consult a doctor or health care provider before using this herbal supplement, as side effects may include insomnia, rapid heartbeat and vomiting. It should not be taken by people with high blood pressure or nursing or pregnant women.

Echinacea

Echinacea is a flower that grows wild in the Midwest. It is used to help the human immune system defend the body against bacteria and viruses. It may also be used to help fight respiratory problems. Echinacea is used externally to soothe insect bites, provide protection from the sun and treat psoriasis and eczema. Echinacea can be taken as a tea.
