Worn externally to collect menstrual blood, sanitary pads offer a convenient way to place a barricade between your monthly flow and your clothing. Because sanitary pads are disposable, it is important to discard them properly. Just like diapers, sanitary pads are a breeding ground for bacteria, according to Cleaning & Maintenance Management. Improper disposal subjects others to blood-borne pathogens and bacterial infection. If you wear sanitary pads, practicing good hygiene can reduce the spread of contagious diseases.
Step 1
Peel the soiled sanitary pad from your underwear. Holding the edges, fold the sanitary pad into thirds, covering the soiled inside and leaving the outside -- the side that has the adhesive -- exposed.
Step 2
Roll up the sanitary pad in a piece of toilet paper. Use enough toilet paper to cover the sanitary pad completely so that it does not unravel.
Step 3
Throw the sanitary pad in the trash if you do not see a receptacle hanging inside the bathroom stall. The receptacle will have "sanitary disposal" or something similar written on the lid or holding container.
Tips and Warnings
- If you do not have enough toilet paper available to wrap the sanitary pad, use paper towels or the plastic wrapper from the replacement pad.
- Never flush sanitary pads down the toilet, as they can cause clogs.
