Abortions end pregnancies. Various types of abortive techniques are available, including the abortion pill and the in-clinic abortion procedures vacuum aspiration and Dilation and evacuation (D and E). The abortion pill, also known as mifepristone, is a synthetic steroid compound used to end pregnancies in the first two months and also as an emergency contraceptive. Vacuum aspiration sucks the contents of the uterus out of the body through the cervix. D and E is a second trimester procedure where the cervix is dilated and the contents of the uterus surgically evacuated.

United States: Planned Parenthood

The Parenthood Federation of America (PPFA®), typically known simply as Planned Parenthood, has more than 850 health centers throughout the United States that are operated by more than 90 independent local affiliates. They advocate for pro-choice legislation, comprehensive sex education and affordable health care for all. Depending on the center, you can get information on everything from sexual and reproductive health care and education to information on abortions or abortion procedures.

This organization serves three million people each year. Of those people, more than 80 percent receive preventative services so they don't get pregnant. Just three percent of all their health services are abortion services, according to the Planned Parenthood website (see Resources).

Family Planning Associates Medical Group operates 17 clinics in the following cities: Bakersfield, Fresno, Modesto, Montclair, Riverside, San Bernardino, San Diego, Angeles, Rosemead, West Los Angeles, Torrance, Downey, Long Beach, Newport Beach, Orange, Mission Hills and Glendale. They perform first relatively simple first trimester (up to 13 weeks) abortions with vacuum aspiration. They also perform second trimester abortions, which take place from 13.5 weeks to 21.5 weeks and require the patient be in surgery for upwards of six hours and spend at least three days at the office. Additionally, they offer women the abortifacient drug Mifepristone (also known as RU-486), which is a non-surgical way to induce abortions. Mifepristone can be taken up to nine weeks into the pregnancy.
