Sargento Cheese is a family owned Wisconsin company that sells cheese to consumers, restaurants and to other companies making foods. Mozzarella String Cheese, Vermont Sharp White Cheddar Cheese Sticks, Mild Cheddar Cheese Bars, Pepper Jack Strips and Colby-Jack Sticks are sold to consumers as individually wrapped cheese snacks. Sargento has created reduced sodium and light versions of several cheese products including the string cheeses.
Mozarella Cheese
String cheese is a form of Mozzarella cheese. Because the U.S. Department of Agriculture, or USDA, defines types of mozzarella cheese based on moisture content and fat content, when you look closely at the packages of string cheese or most Mozzarella cheese sold in stores you will note they are labeled low-moisture, part-skim Mozzarella. There are minimal fat as well as maximal fat content standards to be called Mozzarella cheese.
Sargento Packages
Sargento String Cheese, Light String Cheese and Reduced Sodium String Cheese are sold as individually wrapped cheese sticks in packages of 12 sticks. String Cheese sticks are 28 g are also sold singly and in packages of three or 24. The 5 oz. package of String Cheese has six sticks weighing slightly less 24 g each. The Light String Cheese and Reduced Sodium Cheese sticks at 21 g are even lighter. In addition to the 12-stick version, there are six- and 24-stick packages of Light String Cheese.
Sargento String Cheese
Each 1 oz. stick of Sargento String Cheese has 80 calories with 50 calories coming from fat. The 6 g fat is contains 3.5 g saturated fat or 18 percent of RDA for saturated fat. The cholesterol, 15 mg is 5 percent of RDA, while the 210 mg sodium is 9 percent of the RDA.
Sargento String Cheese 5 oz.
These 24 g sticks are reduced by one-seventh from the size of the 28 g sticks in 24 oz., 12 oz., 3 oz. and single packages of Sargento String Cheese sticks. Their nutrients are also proportionately reduced to 70 calories, total fat 4.5 g, saturated fat 3 g, cholesterol 15 mg and 170 mg sodium.
Sargento Reduced Sodium String Cheese
Sargento uses a different formulation for Reduced Sodium String Cheese. The 21 g sticks are the same size as Light String Cheese sticks and are lighter than either the 24 g or 28 g String Cheese products. Each stick contains 60 calories, 4 g fat, 4 g saturated fat and 10 mg cholesterol. The sodium has almost been halved to 110 mg or 5 percent of RDA.
Light String Cheese
Sargento's Light String Cheese products have the lowest calorie count at 50 calories and fat is reduced to 2.5 g or 4 percent of the RDA. Light String Cheese sticks have less saturated fat 1.5 g or 8 percent RDA and cholesterol 10 mg or 3 percent RDA. The level of sodium, 160 mg, falls between the Sargento String Cheese and Sargento Reduced Sodium String Cheese sticks.
Nutrition
Cheese is recommended for its calcium, and protein content. Sargento String Cheese has 8 g string cheese while Sargento Light String Cheese and Sargento Reduced Sodium String Cheese have 6 g protein. Calcium is also reduced by 25 percent in the Sargento Light String Cheese and Sargento Reduced Sodium String Cheese sticks which have 15 percent of the RDA while Sargento String Cheese has 20 of the RDA for calcium. All of the products have 4 percent of the RDA for Vitamin A.
For those with special diet needs, opting for Sargento Light String Cheese and Sargento Reduced Sodium String Cheese decreases fat, calories and sodium consumed by 25 to almost 50 percent. When choosing which string cheese to eat, remember the 25 percent smaller Sargento Light String Cheese and Sargento Reduced Sodium String Cheese sticks have 25 percent less protein and calcium. Harvard School for Public Health notes those who eat low-fat products tend to eat more fat in other butters, baked goods, ice cream, so if you are watching your fat intake, watch it in all your foods.
