Treatment for Cerebral Palsy

Cerebral palsy is a group of disorders that affect a person's movement, balance and posture, according to the website MedlinePlus. There is no cure for cerebral palsy but there are treatments to improve a person's quality of life.

Medications

Muscle relaxers, such as diazepam, are used to relax stiff and contracted muscles. Botox injections can also help control muscle spasms and involuntary contractions.

Physical Therapy

Physical therapy can help develop muscle strength, coordination, flexibility and motor skills. Development in these areas can improve an individual's ability to work, go to school and walk.

Speech

Speech therapy helps individuals speak more clearly. This type of therapy can also provide other means of communication, such as sign language.

Orthopedic Surgery

Individuals who suffer from severe contractions or deformities sometimes need surgery. Bones, joints and tendons often need to be surgically repaired so arms and legs can be placed in their correct positions.

Other Procedures

In the event that other treatments don't work, doctors sometimes sever the nerves attached to the contracting muscles. This aids in pain relief and spasm control.
