Eating out is a social experience, a way to unwind with friends and family. Restaurant entrees, however, often come in larger portions, which equates to more calories and fat than you would consume at home. Knowing which items to choose is the key to maintaining a healthy diet and avoiding obesity --- a problem for one-third of American adults over the age of 20, according to WIN, the Weight Control Information Network.
Entree Salads
Most people assume that any salad is a great option for healthy eating; however, some salads contain more calories and fat than an ordinary hamburger. It all depends on the toppings. A salad topped with grilled chicken, shrimp or low-fat deli meats may indeed be healthy, but swap the grilled meat for fried, add a full-fat dressing, some bacon and croutons, and a healthy entrée salad becomes a fat-laden bed of greens. The healthiest entrée salads are those that contain a variety of vegetables, low-fat dressings and lean meats.
Grilled Meat Entrees
Grilled chicken and fish are excellent sources of protein. When skimming a restaurant menu, an easy way to determine whether an entrée is healthy is to look for key words. Grilled is preferred over breaded, pan-fried, batter dipped and crispy, which are likely high in fat and calories. Pairing your meat with a healthy side is equally important. Mixed vegetables, wild rice or a baked potato are healthier options than pasta drowned in alfredo sauce, potatoes au gratin or mashed with heavy gravy. HelpGuide.org reports that these items are typically high in calories, sodium and unhealthy fats.
Fajitas
Fajitas are a sizzling specialty at many restaurants. They may be a healthy entrée option, minus the sour cream and heavy cheese. A variety of vegetables, such as red, yellow and green peppers add color, flavor and vitamins to this entrée. "Fitness" Magazine reports that one of the best ways to lose weight and improve health is to consume a variety of colors. A dollop of guacamole provides healthy fat, but too much can break the caloric bank. It is also important to avoid the salted chips that often accompany this dish.
