Overview

Ever since the yellow rubber LiveStrong bracelet came out, awareness bracelets have been extremely popular. For cancer awareness, bracelets have become a way to show support for a loved one or a way to align yourself with the cause. The color that corresponds to brain cancer is grey, and while not as popular as the original bracelet, brain cancer awareness bracelets do exist, both in the popular rubber bracelet form and other forms.

History

The Lance Armstrong Foundation's LiveStrong bracelets debuted in 2004, setting off the awareness bracelet trend. They sold for one dollar each, and the goal was to raise money for cancer research. Over 55 million bracelets later, the bracelets are still going strong. They are worn by politicians like John Kerry, actors like Matthew McConaughey, and millions of individuals living with cancer, and those who love and support them. Once the popularity of these bracelets became apparent, other cancer-related organizations began to produce their own awareness bracelets.

Function

Wearing a brain cancer awareness bracelet shows your support for the cause, and it is an easy way to support loved ones dealing with brain cancer. It is also an effective and simple way of raising awareness among other people about brain cancer. Men, women and children can all wear bracelets, and they are relatively inexpensive to purchase. Some merchants selling the bracelets give the proceeds to brain cancer research, and others put the money toward their organization.

Features

Perhaps the most common brain cancer awareness bracelet is the rubber bracelet, similar to the LiveStrong bracelet. These tend to be the most inexpensive, and are sold by various organizations. Grey rubber bracelets saying either "Cancer Sucks" or "Say it, Fight it, Cure it" are sold for brain cancer by the company Choose Hope, along with other bracelets, and companies like Headcovers Unlimited also sell beaded bracelets with grey and silver beads of all different types for brain cancer awareness.

Considerations

Brain cancer is a less publicized type of cancer than breast cancer, and it can be harder to find brain cancer awareness products and bracelets. Many times general cancer awareness companies or organizations will have bracelets for all types of cancers, including brain cancer. Different bead websites also have awareness beads for you to make your own bracelets to raise brain cancer awareness.

Famous Ties

While brain cancer awareness in general is not well-publicized, in 2008, American Idol contestant David Cook helped raise money and awareness for the cause with a brain cancer awareness bracelet. Cook's brother Adam had brain cancer and the goal was to raise money for both Adam's family and the American Brain Tumor Association (ABTA). The bracelet was purple and grey; grey for brain cancer, and purple for the ABTA.
