How to Cure a Sore Throat Without the Use of Medicine

A sore throat can be one of the first signs of sickness, according to Mayo Clinic. The dry scratchiness is often due to a viral infection from a cold or flu. Viral infections do not respond to antibiotics and must run their course. Methods of treating a sore throat are most effective when they focus on pain relief and reducing inflammation. There are many household products that can be used to cure a sore throat. Persistent soreness paired with other symptoms of illness may be a sign of some other medical concern, such as strep throat, and should be examined by a medical professional.

Step 1

Bring a tea kettle full of water to a boil and then remove it from the heat.

Step 2

Pour the water into a mug. Stir in a teaspoon of lemon juice or squeeze a lemon slice to add its juice. Add 1 to 2 tsp. of honey, according to taste. The heat will dissolve the honey into the water.

Step 3

Sip or drink the mixture after it has cooled for 2 to 3 minutes. The honey will coat the throat while the lemon will break up mucus.

Step 4

Repeat this process as often and as liberally as you want. The soothing properties of the honey, lemon, and water mixture may only last for 1 to 2 hours.

Tips and Warnings

  • Increase water or fluid intake to help combat a sore throat or illness causing the soreness. Gargle with warm salt water to soothe the pain.
  • Use caution when drinking the mixture as overly hot liquids can further aggravate a sore throat. Do not use too much lemon as the citrus can further aggravate the throat.
