Unusual Signs of Early Pregnancy

Most women are aware of the common signs of pregnancy, such as a missed period, morning sickness and fatigue. But there are also some less common signs of pregnancy. Some unusual signs of pregnancy are nothing more than an inconvenience; however, others are serious and warrant a trip to the doctor's office.

Severe Vomiting

While vomiting and nausea are a common symptom of early pregnancy, severe vomiting or hyperemesis gravidarum isn't. This vomiting is persistent and may cause malnutrition. According to the American Pregnancy Association, approximately 1 percent of pregnant women will experience this unusual sign of early pregnancy. Dehydration, electrolyte imbalance, confusion, fainting and marked weight loss are also symptoms of this condition.

Taste

Some women may experience a change in the way that foods taste to them during pregnancy. This change usually manifests as a metallic taste, and often remains present through the entire pregnancy. Excess saliva is another symptom of pregnancy that isn't considered common. Some women will have cravings for non-food items, such as dirt, clay and starch. Should you experience cravings for non-food items, contact your OB/GYN immediately as this is a sign of a condition known as Pica.

Hair and Skin

Spider veins, varicose veins, pigment changes and abnormal hair growth are all unusual signs of pregnancy. Spider veins, which aren't harmful, are tiny red veins that appear near the skin. Varicose veins, which may become painful, are pronounced veins that appear blue. Pigment changes often occur in areas exposed to sunlight, such as the face and neck. You may notice moles and other birthmarks get darker during pregnancy. Facial hair and hair growth in unusual places, such as the stomach or breasts, is also possible.
